Missouri midwifery regulations change over time

Midwifery is an ancient profession. However, its legislation is a controversial topic that has been changing rapidly in the United States. There are two major types of midwifery practices in the country - "Certified Nurse Midwives"(CNMs) and "Certified Professional Midwives"(CPMs). CNMs have been legalized and licensed across the nation, while CPMs remain illegal in some states.

Midwifery legislation evolves in Missouri

Like many other states in the country, Missouri's legalization of midwifery has been controversial. Since 1901, Missouri had very strict regulations on midwifery practice. However, a 2007 midwifery law repealed the past regulations and legalized all direct entry midwifery practices.

CPM legal status varies from state to state

CPMs are nationally certified by the North American Registry of Midwives. However, there is no national licensure on CPMs. Legal status and regulation of CPMs vary from state to state. Currently, Missouri legalizes CPMs but does not license them.
